As the executive body of the municipality, the City Council is responsible for the day-to-day management and planning of the municipality duties and agenda. It is a collegiate body, composed by the Mayor (President) and a variable number of councilors, to whom may be assigned executive responsibilities or not.

The mayor is usually the name who heads the most voted list on the local elections. The team is made up by the mayor and the aldermen are also referred to as a municipal executive or as a city councilor. In the Municipality of Lajes do Pico, the Executive is made up by the Mayor (President), a Vice-President and one Alderman elected by the PS to whom the municipal executive responsibilities were assigned and two more without executive responsibilities, elected by the PSD.

The competences of the City Council are enshrined in the Law of the Local Authorities, which establishes the legal regime of local authorities.
