The Regional Directorate for Culture (RDC), under the Regional Department for Education and Culture, anchors its action on two areas of intervention: the promotion and enhancement of creative and cultural activities, as well as the protection and valuation of built, movable and intangible heritage. RDC holds a set of external services, spread along the nine islands of the Azores.

There are eight Museums, an Ecomuseum and a Contemporary Arts Center, whose complementary themes add to the idea of a cultural whole, in which the specificities of each island are highlighted. There are also three Public Libraries and Regional Archives, one of which benefiting from a Legal Deposit, that enable access to information for all, thus fostering lifelong education and a dynamic cultural life.
