The Oceanic Observatory of Madeira (OOM) seeks to become a centre of excellence dedicated to research and permanent monitoring of the ocean. This initiative brings together a multidisciplinary scientific community, joining several institutions with the aim of promoting cooperation and resource optimization.

The initiative started in January 2014, aiming to consolidate historical data, observations and forecasts in a common platform, and permiting the Autonomous Region of Madeira to meet the demands of marine resources evaluation and management, providing the region with adequate means for its sustainable development.
